The Indian sub-continent is characterised by an intense period of rain and flooding followed by a very long period of dry conditions. This is brought on by a seasonal pressure change and winds that completely change direction. Hot, dry winds that blow down the sides of mountains across the world have been named Fohn, Zondo, Chinook and Berg winds amongst many names. They are caused by adiabatic heating and bring about dramatic temperature increases amongst coastal communities across the world.
